Contemporary Opera Marin

College of Marin Presents Free Operas – June 15 to 30

Contemporary Opera Marin, the opera program of College of Marin, Paul Smith, director, presents two one act operas. Both operas are fully staged and sung in English and will be performed at the College of Marin Kentfield campus as well as the Marin Theater Company, Mill Valley and the Dance Palace, Point Reyes Station. The production runs approximately 75 minutes and admission and parking are free.
Mozart and Salieri by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov
One hundred fifty years before the smash hit movie Amadeus opened in 1984, Alexander Pushkin penned his one act play, Mozart and Salieri, positing the idea that Antonio Salieri poisoned Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart out of sheer jeolousy. Sixty years later fellow Russian Rimsky-Korsakov turned this psychological study into a riveting fifty-minute opera. Is the matter of erudition, artistic integrity and good taste versus sheer genius acceptable grounds for murder? Michael P. Mendelsohn plays Mozart and Salieri is sung by College of Marin faculty member Boyd Jarrell.
Chaplin / Ford Foxtrot by Karl Amadeus Hatmann
K A Hartmann used the dance rhythms of the day: fox trot, tango and waltz, in this choral fantasy composed in 1922 while Germany was in the throes of societal collapse and massive inflation. He dreams of an America where dollars are like sand on the beach, everyone can drive their Ford to the latest Charlie Chaplin film and even the murder of an unfaithful lovers is understandable. A highly charged chorus of twenty race through this absurdist delight in less than twenty minutes.

Both operas are suitable for all audiences.
