Memorial Get-together and Performance for Norman Masonson on Friday, November 7th, from 3:00 pm in PA 75
Norman Masonson, a long-time teacher at COM, conductor, radio host, and supporter/promotor of music in Marin, passed away on August 18th of this year. The Music Department will be hosting an event to celebrate his life, share stories, and make music together in his honor.
We invite you, his friends, colleagues, and musicians who played with him, to come out and participate in an orchestral performance. Please email Tara Flandreau if you are interested in playing in the ensemble: Tara.Flandreau@marin.edu
The Music Department has been a vibrant part of the COM community for over 80 years, starting with just a small orchestra and chorus in the late 1920s, building up a larger music major program after WWII. The comprehensive university level transfer program and the community performing groups were created in the 1960s, along with construction of a new performing arts building which still houses the department today.
We take pride in the quality of our faculty, not only in their teaching excellence, but also in their contributions to the Bay Area music scene through performance and composition. This great tradition of service to our community is carried out by our large performance groups: the College of Marin Symphony Orchestra, Marin Oratorio, the Symphonic Band, Jazz Ensemble, and Contemporary Opera Marin. These groups make exceptional performances accessible to the Marin County community, both on our campus and at many other venues throughout Marin.
The Music Department offers a comprehensive music major program leading to an Associate of Arts degree in music or for transfer to a four-year college or university. Many of our former students have gone on to successful careers in musical performance or composition, in classical, jazz, popular and film music. In addition to our classes for music majors, many of our courses are also appropriate for those wishing to rekindle their musical abilities and interests, increase instrumental or vocal competency, or perform with a large or small ensemble. Whether you want to pursue a career in music, improve your own musical technique, or just listen to great music, the COM Music Department has something for you.
