A Broken Propeller: Baz Bagby and America's First Transcontinental Air Race

In October 1919, 59 pilots flying in open cockpit planes and with no parachutes, competed in a long distance round trip race that began simultaneously in San Francisco, CA and Long Island, NY. Pilots battled rain, fog, snow, and ice. there were forced landings, crashes, and fatalities. Goerke's father was one of only eight who finished the race.
