Science Seminar: Materials Research with Dr. Michael Bartl

Materials Science is an interdisciplinary field that combines principles from chemistry & physics to understand how materials behave.

Materials scientists research, develop, & design manufacturing processes for a wide range of new materials, including metals, alloys, rubber, ceramics, semiconductors, polymers, & glass.

In this seminar, Dr. Bartl will discuss some of the fascinating structures & properties discovered in natural biology. He will share how researchers use these findings to develop bioinspired synthesis & engineering strategies for new materials. Examples include the strikingly colorful world of insects & the self-cleaning ability of many plants—both are the result of periodically ordered nanoscale structures incorporated into hairs, wings, exoskeletons, & leaves.
