The Warrior in You:
Decolonizing and Destigmatizing Mental Health in the Latinx/e Community
Tuesday, May 3, 2022
6 pm–8 pm
Academic Center, Room 255
COM Kentfield Campus
A community gathering of listening, discussion, and artistic expression through music by Professor Ismael Rey Lara, Adjunct Faculty Member in Social Sciences at College of Marin. Light food and refreshments will be served. This event is open to COM students, employees, and community partners.
In collaboration with Psychological Services and the Puente Program, please join us for an evening to gather in community together for this very special event that spotlights music by COM’s own Professor Ismael Rey Lara. He will be sharing music that speaks to his own personal journey with mental health. This event centers on some of the struggles and strengths experienced by Professor Lara, as well as in the broader Latinx/e community, while also respectfully honoring our unique cultural differences and diaspora as Latino/a/x/e and Indigenous people. One of the featured songs for the evening was written and performed by Professor Lara entitled, The Warrior In You.
The image of the mask represents a symbolic but very real, difficult, and common struggle experienced in the Latinx/e Community (as well as in other communities of color) as a way to disguise one’s true self, hide pain, and belong or fit into dominant culture. This mask also represents the Indigenous feathered serpent deity, Quetzalcoatl (Nahuatl). This image was chosen by Professor Lara as a way to reclaim the greatness of his Indigenous heritage and the greatness in himself on his personal journey.
We look forward to seeing you all there!
Masks continue to be strongly recommended for all individuals, regardless of vaccination status, in all indoor public spaces.
