The Black Panther Party for Self-Defense, co-founded by the late Huey P. Newton and Bobby Seale in October 1966, was revolutionary in many ways. Women’s participation and leadership were critical to every aspect of the Party’s 12-year history, emerging as key community organizers at the grassroots and the leadership levels, and leaving a history and legacy worthy of exploration.

Angela D. LeBlanc-Ernest is an independent scholar, documentarian, multi-media content creator, oral historian, and community archivist whose projects focus on 20th-century social movement history, gender, education, and culture.
