We invite students, employees, and community partners to join us in ceremony to honor this special holiday and to give space for our personal and collective experiences in this time of transition. Food will be served.
Day of the Dead combines the ancient Aztec custom of celebrating ancestors. The holiday is like a family and community reunion—with our ancestors as the guests of honor. This is a time to honor your ancestors and those in your family and community who have gone into the spirit world. It emerged from an Aztec ritual known as Miccaihuitl, an honoring of the dead. This is also known as a time for harvesting and for recognizing a seasonal change from light to dark as we're transitioning into the fall.
There will be a community altar and some of the core elements can include a photo of the deceased, their favorite food, flowers, artwork, or a letter. There will also be time allowed for learning about this special holiday as well as community sharing. We look forward to seeing you there. Food will be served.
