Join us for the launch of M³: the Multilingual Multicultural Makerspace at College of Marin. Our maker carts and making tables are open for self-guided exploration during ESL Lab hours (Monday to Friday from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm and Monday to Thursday from 5:00 to 6:30 pm). This pop-up makerspace invites students, faculty, staff, and community members to stop by and make something: brew tea from different regions around the world, contribute to a kaleidoscope of origami butterflies as a way to (re)make the Academic Center gates, and/or write what “home” means to you on a half-sheet of paper. No experience is needed, and you’re welcome to come for five minutes or stay for a full hour, especially during one of our facilitated sessions during which we will make together (Tuesday and Wednesday afternoon from 12:30 to 1:45 pm and Thursday evening from 5:00 to 6:30 pm). Bring your hands, your languages, your stories — we’re excited to see what you make!

Come to our beautiful new library and explore an interactive display celebrating stories of immigrants from around the world who have made the United States their home. This exhibit showcases a selection of books, book reviews and personal narratives written by ESL students, photographs, author quotes, and cultural artifacts. These items give voice to our immigrants and honor their stories, struggles, resilience, and contributions. Join us in recognizing these powerful voices and the diverse experiences that add to the tapestry of our country. We hope you will be inspired and motivated to check out a book to read or share your own thoughts and recommendations.
This display is located near the reference desk in the library on the second floor of the CSS and is a partnership between the COM Library and the English-as-a-Second Language Department.

The College of Marin Library is developing a presentation on the student newspaper, drawing on front pages from 1927 through 2015 to trace the history of the college through major national and local moments. By selecting one front page from each decade, the program will invite visitors to see how campus life has evolved across the college’s first century. The presentation will also highlight the library’s digitization work, which now makes decades of student journalism searchable for students, faculty, researchers, alumni, and the broader community. As part of the Centennial Showcase, the COM Art Gallery features an exhibition of student work organized and installed by students enrolled in the Gallery Design and Installation class. The show highlights the depth and breadth of the Art Department studio disciplines, with representation from sculpture, ceramics, drawing, painting, photography, printmaking, architecture and jewelry. The exhibit runs the entire Showcase week.

EOPS and the Student Support Programs are proud to display the artwork of several students, including pencil sketches, ceramics, painting, poetry, crochet, graphic design, and photography. The artwork includes creative expression from EOPS student Monica Umana who created the painting titled “Unity” for EOPS on display on the second floor of Deedy Hall. The art showcase represents multiple generations of students and celebrates 100 years of creativity at College of Marin. While you’re there, come see EOPS’ first alumni showcase highlighting 10 former students. Learn more about generations of EOPS students who have succeeded at College of Marin and transferred to prestigious universities, established meaningful careers, and inspired generations to come.

Dhani Marin, a Studio Art student, is exhibiting two digital prints of recent original photographs as part of the Centennial Showcase. Their contribution offers visitors a look at individual student creative practice and will complement the larger exhibitions and performances taking place across campus during the week.

The art of netmaking, a symbolic visual language encoding past cultural traditions. As contemporary makers we use this knowledge today in sports, functional containers, in space, the informational ‘internet’, as well as art. NETWORK was produced by the Fiber Sculpture class as a collaborative group project emphasizing recycled fabrics for a sustainable future. It was created April 24th in 2½ hours, with 22 students experiencing how working together we can go beyond with scale, visibility, and meaning in fiber art.

Come tour our ‘smart’ greenhouse during the Centennial Showcase! Learn how this resource connects environmental stewardship, student-led sustainability efforts, and hands-on learning with real world applications. Visitors will be able to explore how practical campus initiatives, such as plant cultivation, monarch butterfly habitat restoration, and composting promote ecological awareness, biodiversity, scientific study, and community engagement at COM. Location: Kentfield Greenhouse (at the north end of Parking Lot 9).

The Science Museum open house welcomes visitors into one of the college’s engaging instructional spaces. Come by the open house and visit the static window displays that line the 1st Floor hallways in the SMN building. This open house is especially attractive to families, prospective students, and community guests because it offers the chance to browse displays and discover scientific material in an informal environment. Stop by for this accessible drop-in science experience. Please note that students may be in the museum during these times; you are welcome to explore the museum but please do so quietly to not disturb the students’ work.

In COM’s Simulation Lab, nursing students step into the RN role, prioritizing care, performing skills, and communicating with the team, all within realistic scenarios where no patient can be harmed. Structured debriefings following each live session transforms each experience into lasting clinical judgment, bridging classroom knowledge and safe, independent practice.
Today is preparation day — drop by and see the simulation lab; Professor Mark can answer questions 10:30–12:30.

The film aims to bring hope to the College of Marin community amidst rising political tensions by providing support to the undocumented community and offering allies resources and ways to make a change. The documentary features interviews with College of Marin faculty and staff, including President Eldridge, Professor Lara, Hugo Guillen from EOPS, and Gerardo Garcia from the Multicultural Center of Marin. After the film showcase, there will be a 30-minute bilingual Q&A session led by College of Marin student and film director Jorge Castillo. Popcorn will be provided!

Varun Sanjeev and Meztli Mendieta, COM Ideation Challenge winners, will present their pitch during the Centennial Showcase in a session focused on innovation, problem-solving, and future-oriented thinking. The event allows the winning students to expand on their original ideas, share the inspiration behind their work, and respond to audience feedback and questions. Come join us as we showcase the talent of our students and explore moving from ideation to implementation across the college!
Note: This will be held during the All Student Services meeting, but all COM employees and students are invited to participate.

Join us at the Lark Theater, 549 Magnolia Ave., Larkspur, for an evening film screening and discussion. Land of Many Waters is a 90-minute ethnogeographic documentary exploring the song, dance, and revitalization rituals of Alleluia, an Indigenous Christian religion and resistance movement in the Amazonian landscape. The program includes an introduction and post-screening Q&A with the director and College of Marin geographer Daniel Cooper, Ph.D. All are welcome. Free Admission.

The Drama Program will include performances of Jaclyn Backhaus’s MEN ON BOATS during Centennial Showcase week. This comic and thought-provoking play revisits the 1869 Colorado River expedition through a contemporary lens, bringing together history, performance, gender, and cultural critique in a dynamic theatrical setting.

Explore the College of Marin campus through the lens of the late Shook Chung, Senior Creative Designer at the College of Marin. This walking tour highlights the photography and design that shaped COM’s visual identity for fifteen years. Meet in the lobby of the Welcome Center at 1:00 pm (wear comfy shoes). The tour takes approximately 30 minutes.

Come see College of Marin’s Geography and Anthropology Lab, where students study the features and processes of our Earth. Join Geography students and faculty to experience simulations of our physical environment with an interactive stream table, a 3D topographic sand box, and student projects on display.
Biology students Wyeth Eberlein and Faeryn Dunnigan, with faculty guidance from Professor Fernando Agudelo-Silva, will share their ongoing research on butterfly biodiversity across both College of Marin campuses. Their presentation highlights field observations, ecological storytelling, and a collaborative art project featuring butterfly-themed works by artists from around the world and the College of Marin community. Visitors can learn why butterfly biodiversity matters today while exploring artwork, crafts, and interactive educational materials inspired by species documented on campus.

Join Sara McKinnon, 42-year veteran retired teacher in College of Marin’s ESL department, for a look at a brief history of immigration policies in the US; how these policies affected immigrant workers in California and other western states in the 20th Century; how Marin County’s population changed in the 100 years of COM’s history; and how College of Marin developed programs to serve the developing immigrant population of Marin County over the last 50 years since 1975.

Members of the Advanced Voice Class will perform songs in a variety of genres, in preparation for their Voice Recital on Thursday, May 21 at 1 PM. This showcase will demonstrate singers’ skills in vocal performance, collaboration with a pianist, self-accompaniment, and original songwriting.

Shawn Nelson, 3D MMST instructor, will host a live table presentation of a custom-built game featuring the College of Marin campus. Created by students for the Indian Valley Campus and recently expanded to include the new Kentfield building. Stop by to hear how the game was built and get some hands-on play time yourself!

Chemistry students will present on the many ways chemistry shapes everyday life and professional fields, from environmental science and pharmaceuticals to beauty products, textiles, engineering, food systems, electronics, and automobiles.

Chamber Singers and Vocal Jazz 1 will perform an exciting program of short choral works, jazz standards, and contemporary works. Selections include arrangements of Blue Skies, Day by Day, Laufey’s From the Start, Sinead O’Conner’s In This Heart, Remember Me from Coco, and more. Supporting the ensembles is a fantastic rhythm section of Marin’s finest jazz players.

The College of Marin Symphony Orchestra performs Dvořák’s melodious and elegant Prague Waltzes, also featuring cellists Renn Smith and Miriam Perkoff in Julius Klengel’s beautiful Concerto for Two Cellos. The evening concludes with Beethoven’s Symphony No. 2, a masterwork filled with rhythmic drive, harmonic flair, and a large dose of good humor. Join us for a memorable and moving concert!
