Midterms are an excellent time to perform a check-up on your Canvas gradebook and make sure your grading practices are working for both you and your students.
This workshop provides faculty with an opportunity to review the Canvas gradebook, explore useful features and settings, and consider strategies that support clear, equitable, and inclusive grading practices.
Topics will include weighted assignment groups, extra credit, managing missing and ungraded work, hiding and releasing grades, and other gradebook settings. We will also explore simple approaches to grading that can increase transparency, reduce unintended barriers, and help students better understand their progress and opportunities for success.
Participants should bring a copy of their syllabus or have their syllabus available in Canvas. Time will be provided to review and work on individual gradebooks, make adjustments, and ask questions.
Session Outcomes
By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:
- Review and configure Canvas gradebook settings to ensure grades are calculated and displayed as intended.
- Identify grading practices that support transparency, equity, and inclusion, including approaches to missing work, grade visibility, feedback, and communicating student progress.
- Evaluate their own syllabus and Canvas gradebook and make adjustments that improve the clarity and effectiveness of grading for students. Accessing Gradebook
